How Auchan Retail is rallying its staff around climate action

Auchan Retail International: raising staff awareness of climate issues with Elucidat and support from Xperteam

In 2022, Auchan Retail International launched a global programme to raise awareness of climate issues. The aim is to engage all employees in the environmental transition through two complementary pathways.

The first is aimed at the Top 750 — members of country executive committees and their direct reports — to embed these issues within the governance framework. The second targets managers and operational teams (logistics, finance, procurement, communications, IT, etc.) to translate these issues into concrete practices.

A wide range of challenges for this climate programme

The key question is: How can we reach diverse audiences across numerous countries whilst maintaining educational consistency and providing high-quality materials?

  • Designing engaging and relevant modules tailored to each profession
  • Ensure rapid dissemination, with translations tailored to local needs
  • Supporting international L&D teams at various levels of expertise
  • Embedding climate concepts firmly into everyday practice

Objectives aligned with Auchan Retail’s climate strategy

Each business sector has set its priorities:

  • Top 750: Understanding climate challenges and incorporating them into the economic model
  • Purchasing/products: align product design and purchasing policy with CO2 emission reduction targets
  • Energy/Technology: Driving the energy transition and associated KPIs
  • Logistics: optimising operations, particularly transport
  • Finance: integrating climate responsibility into investments
  • Communication/marketing: communicating accurately, without greenwashing
  • IT: measuring and reducing the digital carbon footprint
  • Line managers: guiding teams towards more resilient practices

These ambitions called for a robust, collaborative authoring tool that could be deployed on an international scale.

Elucidat has quickly become a tool that is appreciated by all our staff. The support provided by Xperteam, with its monthly ‘Refresh Skills’ sessions, has been essential in unlocking the solution’s full potential. Our Learning Managers in the field have been won over by this concise, practical, effective approach, which is very well structured from an educational perspective. We are eager to see how Elucidat’s future AI features will enable us to further speed up the design process.

The Elucidat solution and support from Xperteam

In addition to the initial system, Auchan Retail has launched an initiative to empower the Group’s countries: local training teams now design their own content on Elucidat, with:

  • easy to get to grips with, even for Learning Managers who do not work full-time on design,
  • visual and educational quality that meets international standards,
  • useful translation features for country-specific deployments.

To support this skills development, Auchan Retail and Xperteam have set up a regular, bilingual and structured CSM support programme, which has brought together a community of users across the country. The recorded Refresh Skills sessions contribute to an internal “Elucidat handbook” (tutorials, best practices, use cases).

Towards a model of accelerated production

Building on this, Auchan Retail and Xperteam are working to implement a “Learning Accelerator” strategy designed to produce high-quality Elucidat microlearning modules more quickly and centrally, in response to requests from individual countries.

The initial aim is to improve efficiency, consistency and educational impact, in order to respond swiftly to emerging needs on an international scale. Subsequently, countries will be better equipped to produce their own content with greater agility.

Key factors for success

  • A close partnership initiated by Auchan Retail, drawing on Xperteam’s long-standing expertise
  • An Elucidat solution tailored to international needs: speed, quality, collaboration, translation
  • A practical approach to CSR, linking training with business challenges

Conclusion

The partnership between Auchan Retail, Elucidat and Xperteam supports the development of the Group’s digital and educational culture.

Whilst the scheme is already open to the Group’s 160,000 employees as learners, the aim is to train more course designers internationally in order to speed up the production and distribution of modules.
